2009 Fashion Forecast
by Laura Miklowitz
It seems that separates have no equal this year. Savvy shoppers are looking for one or two perfect items to build their wardrobe around. Classics, cashmere and comfort are back. Betsy Bradfield of Frock in Asheville offers a styling solution for trying times: “Having a closet consultant, someone to help you define your style, eliminates a lot of costly mistakes,” she says. Still, there’s nothing like the power of the perfect purchase. “Wearing something new can’t be underestimated—buying new clothes is cheaper than therapy,” says Constance Ensner of Constance Boutique and Context in Asheville. Among the boutiques we surveyed, there were some encouraging trends and developments: Asheville consumers are increasingly environmentally conscious, leaning toward sustainable soy, bamboo and organic fibers. Ad-Lib’s Anna Sagel is working toward stocking 100 percent American-made goods. According to Sara Legatski of Asheville’s Honeypot, in a culture of exhibitionist fashion, a more sophisticated look is emerging. “Finally, less is more,” she says. Our advice: keep it simple, and dress for brighter days ahead. 23 Haywood St, Downtown Asheville, 828-285-8838 Customer base: professional and nonconformist women ages 35 to 70 who aren’t the size they were in college and are just fine with that Known for: great hats and scarves Signature item: Bula bags, made by a local artist You won’t find: bikinis Fashion forecast: “back to basics” and functional pieces to jazz up wardrobes Auten’s on Main 317 N. The key accessory for 2009 is undoubtedly a tighter belt. Local boutique owners concede that frivolous and opulent are out and basics are in. Historically, when the stock market plummets, hemlines rise, and when the financial landscape appears gloomy, fashion compensates with bright and intensely cheerful colors. “Always during a recession, we see more color,” says Matt Chambers of Bellagio in downtown Asheville.
