Bring Back that Lovin' Feelin'

Asheville sexologist Kelley Wolfe on boosting the female libido.

It’s one of the hottest topics in sexology: the idea that for some women, both young and old, a healthy libido must be cultivated. “You have to work at sexual desire. It’s your responsibility,” says Kelley Wolfe, one of the only practitioners in the area to call herself a sexologist (as opposed to a sex therapist). We asked Wolfe for tips on revving up a sputtering sex drive.

Why do some women lack interest in sex?

We have a lot of responsibilities. We take care of a lot of things and a lot of people. As part of that, we tend to take care of ourselves last. Part of taking care of ourselves is staying interested in sex. We need to be very intentional about sex as a priority if we want sex to be a priority.

What three pieces of advice would you give to women looking to improve their sexual health?

1. Know what you need to be turned on. 2. Enjoy the pleasures of your whole body. If you like to walk, walk. If you like something else, do it. Really connect with pleasure. Say yes to something you would normally say no to, and no to something you would say yes to. 3. For women, self-pleasuring increases desire. It’s the use it or lose it theory—if we we’re not sexual with ourselves, our sexual health won’t be up to par.

Why is sex so important?

The rewards from a satisfying sex life have a positive impact on living fully. Sex is crucial to the human experience. It keeps us healthy and connected, it reduces stress and it feels good.
