Jennifer Scott: Covering the Beatles for a Better World

Today she works as a psychotherapist in Downtown Hendersonville, but she’s also a jazz, folk and rock ‘n’ roll singer by night, performing at Hendersonville clubs with her band, The Guys From New York. Every year, Scott and The Guys (two of the three are from New York City) play jazz standards and Beatles tunes at a handful of benefits, including Bands for Bounty in early December. The show, featuring several area bands, raises money for Hendersonville’s Bounty of Bethlehem, a free Christmas Day meal that feeds between 3,000 and 4,000 people. “They range from homeless people to the wealthy and lonely,” says Scott. She also sings for and donates cash to other Hendersonville charities, like the Friends of Santa Claus, a nonprofit that treats kids with cancer to a variety of outings, like trips to baseball games and the Camp MerryTimes summer camp. Though she gets paid to sing every Wednesday night at Downtown Hendersonville’s Square One Bistro, she feels better about herself when she can give the gig money away. “It’s much more fulfilling to give away a tip jar than take it with you at the end of the night,” she says. Jennifer Scott grew up in Boca Raton, Florida, but got her true education in downtown Detroit. As part of her master’s degree in clinical social work at Detroit’s Wayne State University in the 1980s, she spent several months at a downtown rape crisis center, where she counseled up to 25 rape victims each day. After growing up in a relatively affluent city, the experience opened her eyes to the disparate lives Americans lead, and she vowed to spend her time and energy helping those less fortunate than herself.
